Non-Violent Communication (NVC) is a set of techniques for improving empathy between people - generally in some kind of difficult relationship lacking harmony - it applies couples and families as well as to the workplace or even conflict resolution in war zones…

NVC uses the assumption that when a human being can have their needs met then they will be in harmony. The problem is that sometimes, we don’t know how to express our needs effectively and sometimes we don’t even know what the need - often emotional - actually is. NVC goes through a series of steps first to help teach us how to listen to ourselves and recognise how we feel (instead react in aggressive ways), then how to recognise the need that we have and then how to ask the other person to help us fulfil this need. Non-Violent communication has been used successfully for a number of years for resolution of conflicts in couples, families, workplaces, classrooms and war zones.
